I didn’t have a five year plan, I had curiosity.

As it turns out, that was enough to build a pretty interesting life.

I left home at 19 and started following whatever adventure came next. That took me through the Army, Chicago, and eventually onto a cruise ship in Hawaii. I was supposed to work in customer service. Instead, I became fascinated by what was happening on deck.

I wanted to work with the crew, use the tools, understand how the ship moved, and be part of the work itself. So I asked questions, made connections, and found my way into a job as an unlicensed deckhand.

From there, I worked my way up the hawsepipe. I spent 12 years working as a sailor in a variety of roles, eventually earning maritime credentials including Captain 100 Ton and Mate 200 Ton.

But the sea wasn't the end of the story, it was the place where I discovered what came next.

THE CAMERA CHANGED EVERYTHING.

While working aboard research vessels, I started making videos of the science happening around me.

At first, I was just sharing them with friends and family. Then the scientists saw them.

They saw that I could take complicated research and turn it into something engaging, understandable, and human. One scientist told me, “You're a communicator.”

I didn't even know that was a job.

That moment opened an entirely new chapter.

I began working as a science communicator and videographer, joining research expeditions around the world and helping bridge the gap between scientists and the general public through storytelling, education, humor, and video.

I've filmed research at sea, worked alongside scientists, explored places most people will never see, and learned that some of the most fascinating stories aren't just about what we're discovering.

They're about the people doing the discovering.

Nothing is a waste of time if it matters to you.

Every experience gave me another skill, another perspective, another relationship, or another piece of the puzzle.

I never could have planned the career I have now because I couldn't have seen all the connections from the beginning. That's the beauty of following your curiosity.

You don't have to know how everything will connect. You just have to keep collecting the experiences that matter to you.

And then I got to reinvent myself again

For a long time, my identity was tied to the sea and the credibility I had earned there.

When I began moving into science communication, storytelling, and eventually public speaking, I realized I was holding onto that identity because I was afraid of losing the strength I'd worked so hard to build.

But my credibility wasn't the ship or the title they’d given me, it was me. The grit, curiosity, courage, creativity, and persistence that got me there were already part of who I was. I could carry them into whatever came next.

You don't have to follow a prescribed path to create a meaningful life.

You can change direction or learn something completely new.

You can discover a career you didn't know existed and also take the long way around. You can be curious before you're confident. And you can become someone you couldn't have imagined when you started.

The women who came before us fought for choices that many of us now have the privilege of making.

I want to use that freedom. And I want other women to know they can use it too.

So if there's something calling you, follow it.

You don't need to know exactly where it will lead, and you might be surprised by who you become along the way.
